About Our Artistic Director
Nives Wetzel de Cediel is an internationally trained visual and performing artist with 20 years of experience in performance and dance education. Nives has studied and performed Spanish, Brazilian and Cuban dance with groups such as Bailes Flamencos, Ginga Brasil, Fogo na Roupa and Kubata. She studied Capoeira for 8 years with the late Mestre Carlos Aceituno.
Nives is energetic, knowledgeable and skilled as a dancer and teacher. She is committed to making sure you have fun, feel challenged and find your own personal groove. You will learn a variety of Afro-Brazilian dance forms such as Samba, Samba Reggae and Afoxe. As you develop skill with basic footwork, dance combinations will gradually increase in complexity culminating in two choreographies. Wear comfortable clothes and flexible-soled or no shoes.
Nives currently teaches a middle and high school course at Emery Secondary School called "Afro Brazilian Dance, Martial Arts, Music and History." Many of her students have participated with Batucada do Leste in previous Carnaval parades. The Emery Secondary School 'ala' is known as 'Pasaro de Fogo' (Firebird/Phoenix).
