About Our Director

Known as 'Batucada do Leste' ('Drummers of the East'), the East Bay Community Samba School is an exciting and talented community based samba group in the East Bay. The group is comprised of men and women of all musical skill levels, under the direction of Samuel Daffner.

Our primary goals in founding the School were to make it possible for ANYONE to learn about Samba music, become proficient in its performance, and ultimately to perform in the Carnival Festival and other venues. Because we are committed to BIG FUN playing drum music in a positive, family-friendly environment, we have been able to grow the group and really achieve an extrordinary level of musicianship. We're also very excited to acheive the same level of FUN and excellence with our Dance component.

"By working to learn a common drum language together we strive to live up to the truest ideals of a samba school: pride in oneself, community identity and cooperative effort. The beauty of this group is its ability to bring people together to deliver a meaningful message through its artistic expression."
    -- Samuel Daffner, Director, 2007
