About Us

'Batucada do Leste' ('Drummers of the East'), aka the East Bay Community Samba School is an exciting and talented community based samba group located in the East Bay. The group is comprised of men and women of all music and dance skill levels.

Under the direction of Samuel Daffner. Batucada do Leste's goals are to make it possible for ANYONE to learn about Samba music, become proficient in its performance, and ultimately perform in the San Francisco Grand Carnaval Parade and other venues. Batucada do Leste is committed to having BIG FUN, making great music and dance in a positive, family-friendly environment. We've developed a full calendar of events for the 2010 season.

Batucada do Leste features the talented performance and teaching of Artistic Director, Nives Wetzel de Cediel!!! She brings a positive and youth-friendly approach as well as a wealth of dance experience.

Batucada do Leste proudly presents its 2010 theme and the title of its enredo, 'O Mundo' which means 'the world.' Through this theme we acknowledge the actual gift of our natural world — air, water, land, vegetation — and all beings that depend upon it. Through this year's musical arrangements and choreographies we are reminded to care for each other and protect our fragile natural resources.

'O Mundo' is also the figurative 'world' of innovation, creativity, retrieval and resilience. This world exists whenever we strive to remember, understand and embrace the cultural legacy left to us by Africans who survived the middle passage. The study, practice and performance of diaspora arts gives form and meaning to the work of Batucada do Leste. Every carnaval season presents an opportunity to renew our connection and commitment to each other and to those who came before us.
