Make-up Tips
by Tameir Powell 4.16.10

Think of make-up as part of your costume, part of your metamorphosis from your daily self to your Carnaval self! You don't have to look like a completely different person, but don't be afraid to go outside your everyday comfort zone. Carnaval, after all, is not "every day."

As Nives says, "Make-up is an integral part of the 'transformation' that must take place to go from a practitioner and student of dance to a performer. The moment the dancer rises from her bed, on the day of her performance, she begins to change. A better word here is 'expand.' Make-up and costume is an expansion, an amplification of the interior self."

Eyes
A professionally shaped brow is an instant lift to the face. You can also fill in the brow for more emphasis, using a color a few shades lighter than your hair so as not to look "drawn" on. If you're going to wear false lashes, apply them before doing your eye makeup. The area where the false lashes attach to your lash line can be hidden with shadow and eyeliner.

If using more than one color on the eyes, follow these tips -

  • 2 shadow colors - lightest of the 2 colors on brow bone as a highlight, or from lash line to brow as your base color. Darkest color on lid, corner, or crease. Depending on how dark the other shadow color is, you may be able to use it as a liner if you wish. Eyeliner does not always have to be black or brown. Deep blues, purples, and greens make great liners!

  • 3 colors - lightest on brow bone as a highlight, 2nd lightest on lid, darkest in corner or crease, or as a liner. Blend, blend, blend! You don't want a hard line between colors. Think "sunset," not "parfait."

If you're not sure what colors to use, golds and bronzes tend to flatter all skin tones. If you really want to get creative, use golds and bronzes contrasted with purple, pink, orange, teal, aqua, emerald, or lime to compliment our color scheme.

***IMPORTANT**** If wearing a strong eye, keep the rest of the face simple. For example - a dark lip color coupled with an eye with lots of blue and green shadow isn't flattering. Keep the lips simple - gold, bronze, nude, pink, or peach.

  • 1 color - You don't have to paint 10 colors on your lid to look "done." One simple color swept over the lid with liner and mascara is a polished look. Dust a sheer gold or bronze over the entire lid, add some liner and mascara and voila - your eyes will still stand out in photos. Again, don't be afraid to use color (deep blue, purple, green, etc) for liner. It really stands out if you're wearing one neutral eyeshadow.

Cheeks
Peaches and pinks work for nearly every complexion, from the fairest of fair to the deepest ebony. Don't be afraid of a a bit of color on the cheeks! It really makes a look pop.

Foundation
Keep it sheer and dewy. Be sure to blend so there is no hard line around the jaw. A sheer bronzer can be dusted over foundation for a fairy dust effect. You can also use an illuminating highlighter in gold, bronze, or iridescent pink, depending on skin tone.

Lips
Sheer gold, peachy colors, goldish pinks, and bronzes work well with just about any complexion. If you don't want to touch up your lip color all day, try a lip stain. It will leave color even when the product itself has worn away. If you're going simple on your eye make-up, consider a bright pink or red lip as your focus point!

Make-up is fun, so have fun with it!
